The list below shows the notable characters in each generation of toys and animated series released.

The Earth ponies are ponies who have a special connection to nature and animals. They lack the ability to cast magic spells like the unicorn ponies, or the ability to stand on clouds like the pegasus ponies. Usually, they are the basic form of the My Little Pony Toys.

Alicorn Ponies were considered to be the strongest race of ponies. They usually live to 1000 years old and has exceptional abilities far more superior than Unicorn Ponies or Pegasus Ponies.

The Seaponies are brightly colored seahorse-like creatures who dwell in the rivers and lakes of Dream Valley. The love underwater polo and can perform elaborate songs and dance numbers. They only appeared in the two Generation 1 Specials only and they are based on the Hippocamp, a mythological creature shared by Phoenician and Greek mythology. A sub-line of the Seaponies called Baby Seaponies debuted later in 1985 and later in My Little Pony: The Movie.
